AREAS OF PRACTICE
What is a Residency-Trained Doctor?
Doctors who have advanced training in a specialty service and have completed
a two- or three-year residency program and one-year internship. After
successfully passing a board exam, they attain board certification
in their specialty.
What is a Board-Certified Specialist?
Veterinary specialists train in a distinct area of expertise after veterinary
school to provide cutting-edge knowledge for care of pets. Areas of
specialty include critical care, internal medicine and surgery, just
to name a few.
Often, your veterinarian will refer your pet to a specialist when your pet needs
more in-depth diagnostics, surgery, or around-the-clock critical care.
A board-certified veterinarian is a doctor who completes additional education
in a specific field of veterinary medicine. Once the education is complete,
the doctor must pass a thorough written and oral board exam to become “board
certified.”
Critical Care
Cases that need overnight monitoring and IV fluids are sent to the intensive
care unit, where critical care specialists and emergency doctors care
for the pets. Many of theses animals have sustained major trauma, such
as those hit by a car that could need an overnight blood transfusion
or emergency abdominal or chest surgery. In some situations, your pet
may become very ill and may need urgent diagnostics. In such situations, no appointment is necessary, and your pet receives top
priority. Meet Our Critical Care Docs . . .
Internal Medicine
Internal medicine specialists are available for advanced diagnostics
such as abdominal/cardiac ultrasound, bone marrow aspirate, bronchoalveolar lavage, CSF taps, endoscopy, rhinoscopy, and cystoscopy.
Our internal medicine specialists also perform chemotherapy and consult
on many different problems regarding your pet. Meet Our

Surgery
Your veterinarian often will recommend a surgical specialist for a variety
of orthopedic concerns such as injured knee ligaments or back problems.
Many times, a surgical specialist performs complicated surgeries involving
the liver and lungs, with associated tumor removal. They often work
with the critical care doctors and the critical care nursing staff
to monitor anesthesia and postoperative care. Meet Our
