Surgery Nurse Responsibilities and Requirements

Surgical assistant needed for growing surgery practice within our emergency and specialty practice. Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years experience as a veterinary technician or assistant – and at least 2 years in an ER/Specialty setting. Candidate should be proficient in all aspects of surgery – including anesthesia, monitoring, sterilization and asepsis. Exceptional customer service skills and commitment to client education is required. Secondary education in a science-related field at the AS or BS level and/or Certification at the CVT/LVT or similar level is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities:

Promote company vision, mission statement and purpose.  Plays a positive and active role in fostering team relationships, leads by example and communicates effectively.  Must be flexible, cooperative, dependable, responsible, and have good time-management skills.  This position requires you to be self motivated and be able to differentiate between major and minor issues as they relate to clients and patients.

 

 Position duties include, but not limited to: 

  • Preparation of patients for anesthesia (pre-op blood work, assessments, radiographs, other tests and procedures as ordered by surgeon).
  • Anesthetizing, maintaining, monitoring and recovering patient’s perioperatively.  Must be proficient in drug and CRI calculations.
  • Arrange the operating rooms (OR) prior to surgery, restore the OR to cleanliness and order following surgery.Act as scrub nurse assistant to surgeon as needed.
  • Circulate the OR during surgery. Learn, recognize and anticipate surgeon’s needs, open packs and instruments aseptically.
  • Prepare patients for surgical procedures (clipping, scrubbing, positioning on table, connecting to monitoring equipment, etc).
  • Maintain surgical equipment and inventory, including cleaning, wrapping, sterilizing and organizing.Proper handling, completion of paperwork, and submission of surgical histopathology and microbiology samples.
  • Produce quality radiographs safely and efficiently.Communicate effectively with clients during surgery receiving days and on follow up phone calls.
  • Educate clients about surgical procedures, follow-up care, risks and possible complications.Maintain surgery log and patient records accurately.
  • Willingness and ability to work with a rotating staff of nurses, surgeons, and other clinicians.
